Why I Do What I Do

Victor Frankl, the acclaimed psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, titled his famous memoir, “Man’s Search for Meaning”. Ever since I was a small boy, I’ve been searching for meaning. I started this quest at an unusually young age because of an unusual upbringing: My mother and grandmother were both Holocaust survivors. My mother was hidden via the Belgian Underground Resistance for three years, and my grandmother was arrested, imprisoned and then liberated from a concentration camp. Their traumatic wartime experience shaped their worldview. It also shaped how they raised me and led our family. Life at home felt viscerally different than life at school or over at friends’ houses. At the time, I had no idea why. We never talked about it.

I became highly attuned to other people’s emotions and behaviors. I studied psychology and theater—disciplines that focus on human behavior and motivation. I learned about group dynamics and acquired facilitation skills.

In my personal and professional life, I’ve been driven to understand what actions produce or destroy trust, improve or stifle communication, build bridges or walls, create engagement or apathy, and create high performance or high dysfunction.

Frankl wrote...

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

I do what I do because I’m on a mission: I want to create a vibrant and alive world by kindling the fire of brilliance in people. I believe that when your brilliance shines brightly, you’re able to see that space between stimulus and response more clearly. You can access your power.

You can find freedom.
